LGBTQ and Mental Health Services
We try to make treatment as simple as possible by offering a full range of services in one convenient location. One of the major benefits of going to UCS Healthcare for your LGBTQ medical care needs is that we provide integrative care and offer a very wide range of services at one convenient location so you don’t need to visit multiple clinics. UCS Healthcare medical providers care about the mental health of all patients along with their physical health, and we can provide care for mental health issues, psychiatric needs and substance use disorders. We have found success in implementing this type of integrative process, and we can make it easy to get the healthcare you need by offering referrals within our office. Whether you're discovering your identity, transitioning or seeking a welcoming healthcare experience, UCS Healthcare is here to help with your unique situation.
UCS Healthcare providers understand that not everyone is born in a body they’re comfortable in, and our team specializes in providing care options for persons that are in the process of switching genders. One of our primary LGBTQ healthcare providers, Dr. Joe Freund, helped develop a protocol for transgender healthcare that’s used nationwide.
UCS Healthcare Facilitates LGBTQ Support Groups
Along with counseling and other LGBTQ medical care services, UCS Healthcare has opportunities for patients and families to participate in various support groups. Our 18+ Transgender Support Group meets weekly on Thursdays at UCS Healthcare from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. We encourage individuals at any stage in their journey to come together, share their various experiences with like-minded people who are facing similar struggles or situations and support one another along their journeys.
We also have LGBTQ support groups for teens in the transgender stages and their parents. Led by professional facilitators, teens and parents meet at the same time each week but in separate rooms to give each group more privacy. We want to encourage the conversation around these topics that not everyone is willing to discuss, and we give these individuals a space where they can feel comfortable being their truest self and meet more people in their community.
Treating LGBTQ-Specific Healthcare Issues
Along with an extensive range of healthcare options, UCS Healthcare providers take special care when treating members of the LGBTQ community. All annual physicals, wellness care and other integrated treatment options are performed by medical providers that are aware and supportive. We have on-site integrated care for mental health, psychiatric care, medications, substance use disorders, and our Des Moines clinic also offers medical care meant specifically for members of the LGBTQ community.
- HIV/AIDS screening and treatment
- Hepatitis screening and treatment
- Sexually transmitted diseases (STD)
- Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
- Hormone treatment during transition
