Dr. Joe Freund heads our medical team with more than 25 years as a licensed medical doctor in the state of Iowa. In addition to providing full service family medical services, Dr. Joe is a recognized expert for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender health care. While working to provide compassionate and well-informed LGBT health care to his patients, he has also taught extensively on the subject to co-workers, students, professionals and the public. He helped to develop a protocol, which is used nationwide to provide transgender health care. Dr. Joe presents on the topic LGBT health care across the U.S. and Canada and has been an invited speaker multiple times to the Annual Scientific Assembly for the American Academy of Family Physicians.
He has been board certified in Iowa since 1985 and among his professional affiliations are American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, Iowa Academy of Family Physicians and more. Dr. Joe is a graduate of the University of Minnesota medical school and completed his residency at St. Joseph's/Mercy in Mason City, Iowa.
Loren A. Olson, M.D., is a board certified psychiatrist and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He was recognized in 2009 by the National Alliance on Mental Illness with the "Exemplary Psychiatrist" award. Dr. Olson wrote the book "Finally Out: Letting Go of Living Straight, a Psychiatrist's Own Story" and is a popular speaker on the subjects of mental illness and LGBT health.
He graduated from the University of Nebraska medical school and completed his rotating internship at Bryan Memorial Hospital. He served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy, then completed his residency in psychiatry at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME. Dr. Olson served as the medical director of psychiatry at Mercy Medical Center and Mercy clinics before opening his solo practice in Des Moines. He is a member of the American Medical Association and American Psychiatric Association and was board certified in 1975. He is licensed in the State of Iowa.
